The Shark Guard 9.0.
|
Lots of info below. Please scroll down.

|
I currently have about an 8 week lead time as far as I can tell. Some cases longer. I am making them as fast as possible. Please don't be discouraged if I haven't gotten to yours yet. Feel free to ask about the status of your order at any time via email.
I have never had the volume of orders that I currently have. If you would like to order now, just drop me an email with the details of what you would like. I will then put you in the que on my production list. We could settle up when your order gets close to ship date.
I have also never produced as many guards per week as I currently do. Still tweaking production and building machines to help, so in the future, hopefully I can decrease instead of increase lead time.
You can use Paypal already if you want, but just be aware of the backlog I am currently experiencing and the fact the Paypal will either withdraw your funds or charge your card immediately. This I have no control over. The lead times are simply estimates and should not be considered concrete.
Thanks a bunch to all.

Craftsman Professional "Snap in" Shark Guard
This Shark Guard utilizes a "Snap In" splitter mount that I designed with the help of Rich Z. and Andrew B. Thanks a bunch, Guys. This makes it very easy to change the splitters for different thicknesses of stock being cut. The mounting bracket is made out of 1/4" steel on earlier models and now uses 5/16" steel. It uses a spring plunger to lock the splitter into this mounting bracket. Since you won't be removing the slip in bracket anymore. You won't need tools to switch out the different sized splitters. There are 4 oval tipped set screws that serve to tighten up the play on the splitters. Once set, you can use any of the same thickness splitter in the mount. If you wanted to use a different thickness splitter, you just adjust the set screws. Thin kerf splitters will be standard, but some that are a little thicker will be available in the future as special order. The bracket is set up to use both.
If you have looked at other blade guards or dust covers, then you may be aware that the Shark Guard is different. It actually is a blade guard rather than just a blade cover. Its more of a safety system since it can be configured in so many different ways for different types of cuts. These are very strong. They are made out of polycarbonate, not just cast acrylic. Dang near bullet proof.
This design gets rid of the long splitter that mounts at the rear of the saw. This allows a nice outfeed table to be used without interference from the splitter. There are three different splitters that come with this Shark Guard package. One is the tallest one. It is for use when cutting the thickest of stock.
The next size down should be snapped in to cut 1.5" and thinner stock.
There is a shorty splitter for use when you can't use the guard. You unhook the Shark with the hose still attached and hang it up. Snap out the larger splitter and clamp without removing the clamp from the splitter. Pop in the Shorty and you are ready to go. This is the splitter that would be in place when you wanted to use a "GRR-Ripper".
These Grippers are a nice accessory to have for a tablesaw or router table. If you haven't already and regardless of whether you buy a Shark Guard, do yourself a favor and check out the "GRR-Ripper".

I produce these guards using the best material and techniques possible in the Leeway Workshop. These are all handmade and powder coated to order. As such, I do not have a warehouse full of them. I do now use my shop built CNC router for the slots and dado's on the sides. This affords speed, precision and repeatability, but I did make the cnc by hand. ;) They may also have minor imperfections on them. There are very few perfect ones that I have made. To glue them up, I have to remove the protective film. This is inviting Murphy to help out. If they have more than one or two minor scratches or drips, they are sold as seconds. I make them on a first come first served basis. Orders for these have been tremendous. I do love building anything in my shop and these are no exception.
I have the
plans
on my site for the 1.0 version and some of the
upgrades and newer patterns
of the Shark Guard. If you are handy, you may choose to make one of these yourself.

How to determine your splitter/riving knife thickness.
These are my typical recommendations on which thicknesses to choose when ordering.
The thicknesses I offer are actually just standard steel gauges. 13, 12 and 11. The smaller the number, the thicker the stock. Here is a link to standard steel sheet gauges.
Steel Gages.
Most factory supplied guards use 14 gauge and even less in some cases. Very few use thicker, but there are some. These are the thicknesses I start out with. Then when I powder coat them, it adds 3 or 4 mils of coating to each side.
It has been my experience that getting a splitter very close to the blade thickness is bad. It can often result in sticking and pinching on nearly every cut. This is also not safe. It will cause you to want to apply more pressure to feed and that is undesirable. You may have seen guys cut lumber the exact thickness of the kerf and use this as a splitter mounted into the throat plate. I think the reason that works is because the splitters are so small, they don't have enough area to cause much friction.
The larger area of bigger splitters will cause issues if they are too thick.
I only sell just a few of the thickest versions. They would be ideal on a saw in a cabinet shop that was dedicated for sheet goods. They also work on saws that have an easily adjusted splitter mounting bracket. Some are easy and some can be a bear.
I sell the thin kerf the most. .090 inch thickness. I recommend these for guys that use both type blades. Thin kerf and standard kerf. It actually works well for both because of the area of the splitter surface. Guys that don't own any thin kerf blades usually order the .105". These are just a little thicker and may even support the guard just a bit better because of it.
I would say that a good splitter should be just a bit less than the thickness of your kerf. Safety should be easy and trying to use a splitter that is too thick is a step in the wrong direction.
